Adult Speech, Language & Voice

Support for communication changes at every age.

Adults may seek an evaluation for voice, speech, language, fluency, or cognitive-communication concerns. A qualified clinician can help determine whether therapy, medical assessment, or another next step may be appropriate.

For: Adults of all ages

Adults may notice communication changes after a stroke, brain injury, neurological condition, illness, or surgery. Others seek support for long-standing speech, language, fluency, voice, accent, or professional communication concerns.

An evaluation focuses on the areas related to your concerns. This may include speech clarity and motor speech, word finding and language, fluency, voice, or cognitive-communication skills such as attention, memory, and organization.

If services are recommended, the clinician explains the goals, strategies, and methods used to review progress. Voice concerns may require an ENT or other medical evaluation before or alongside speech-language services.

Communication changes that may warrant an evaluation

  • Your speech has changed following an illness, injury, surgery, or medical event
  • Others have difficulty understanding your speech
  • You struggle to find words, follow conversations, or express your thoughts
  • Memory, attention, or organization changes make daily communication harder
  • Speech feels slow, effortful, slurred, or difficult to coordinate
  • Stuttering or another fluency concern affects participation
  • Your voice is frequently hoarse, breathy, or strained
  • You experience vocal fatigue, discomfort, or changes in range or volume

Practical communication strategies

Recommendations may address speaking, listening, word finding, memory, attention, or communication in everyday activities, depending on evaluation findings.

Voice care with medical input

For some voice concerns, an ENT or another medical provider may need to evaluate the larynx before or alongside speech-language services.
