Oral Habit Elimination

Help your child break the habit — with compassion, not shame.

Thumb sucking, nail biting, prolonged pacifier use, and other oral habits are common in young children. When they persist, they may affect dental development, oral resting posture, swallowing, and speech placement. We help children stop with positive, supportive methods. No punishments. No shame.

For: Typically age 4 and older

When oral habits continue beyond toddlerhood, they can contribute to dental changes like open bite or overjet, changes in oral resting posture, speech placement concerns, skin irritation, social stress, and more complex orthodontic needs later.

We start with understanding. Every child and every habit is different — we learn when, why, and how often your child engages in the habit, and assess any oral or dental effects.

Therapy is positive and child-led. We use age-appropriate strategies that build your child's own awareness and motivation to change. Parents are essential partners: you'll learn how to support your child at home without nagging or power struggles. Timelines vary based on readiness, frequency of the habit, and any related airway or dental factors.

When it's time to get help

  • Your child is 4 or older and still sucking their thumb or fingers
  • You notice dental changes — gaps, overbite, open bite
  • The habit happens frequently throughout the day
  • Your child wants to stop but can't
  • The habit is causing skin damage or calluses
  • Your dentist or orthodontist has recommended stopping

Children stop habits most successfully when they want to and have the tools to succeed. If your child isn't ready yet, we'll help you prepare them and find the right timing.
